Peacock loses $704 million

Peacock Loses $704 Million, Reaches 22 Million Subscribers Days after Comcast fired NBCUniversal’s Jeff Shell, the company held its first-quarter earnings call, addressing the former CEO’s departure and Peacock’s growing losses. Brian Roberts, chairman of NBCU’s parent company, didn’t shy away from the Shell news, telling investors Thursday morning that the firing was “obviously a tough moment” for the organization. As a result, Comcast president Mike Cavanagh will step in as head of NBCUniversal for the time being. Regarding Peacock, the streamer grew its subscriber base to nearly 22 million, adding 2 million during the quarter as Comcast continues to lean into a dual-revenue model. The 2 million additions are down from the 5 million it added to end 2022. [...]

The Netflix ad-supported plan now offers high-quality streaming

The Netflix ad-supported plan became available to the public sometime last year, and it is now getting better. This subscription tier makes the streaming platform more affordable for users around the world. So, instead of asking friends for their password to stream a movie everyone can own an active Netflix account. Previously, this plan only offered users the opportunity to stream movies in 720p resolution. If you stream a lot of movies and shows, you will agree that this is a poor resolution for user experience. Since Netflix offers up to 4K Ultra-HD video streaming for its users, those on the ad-supported plan are at the bottom of the ‘streaming chain.’ But all of that is coming to an end [...]

Streaming Fatigue

Streaming Fatigue: 39% Cancel Subscriptions and 55% Join New Services The last year has seen the launch of major series The Last of Us and Poker Face along with the return of juggernauts Ted Lasso and You—all of which appear across multiple major streaming platforms. But with rising inflation contributing to elevated household costs, many Americans want to simplify their viewing experience. We surveyed 1,000 Americans to gauge their streaming habits and found that over 1 in 3 have canceled a streaming service subscription in the past six months, with most respondents citing a need to cut back on monthly expenses. That’s even higher than our rate last year when we found that 25% of Americans were planning to leave [...]

12% of direct-to-consumer (D2C) streaming services in the United States are being paid for by someone outside of the immediate household. New streaming record in Poland

Streaming viewership on the TV screen is on the rise in Poland. In February, according to Nielsen’s The Gauge, viewers in the country spent an average of 16 minutes a day watching streaming content on TV (an increase of one minute from January). Streaming viewership reached a record 6.4% of total TV time, surpassing 6% of TV usage for the first time. Netflix and YouTube were the most popular streaming platforms. Together, they accounted for more than 50% of all streaming viewership on TV screens. Netflix remained the most popular streaming option, retaining a 1.8% share of total TV viewership. This was, however, an increase in the viewing figures within the “other streaming” category, which includes providers that have not [...]

Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ head streaming users’ most essential services

Research from Aluma Insights has found that two-thirds of Netflix buyers view the service as fundamental to meeting household video needs, with only Hulu and Disney+ also having the majority of users considering the service essential instead of just nice to have. The data comes from a December 2022 survey of 1,947 US adult broadband users in charge of purchasing media services for their household and that watch SVOD services on TV. Aluma balanced the sample to represent SVOD viewers and their households. Noting that being indispensable has its advantages, Aluma added that the fact Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+ topped the essentials list was unsurprising and so was the finding that Epix Now was the least essential services. Yet it [...]
