YouTube testing gesture that lets you quickly 2x playback speed

Boosting playback speed is a common occurrence with most YouTube content these days, especially with podcasts, and Google is making it easier to 2x videos with a new gesture. Currently, on mobile, adjusting Playback speed requires tapping the video window to show controls and pressing the settings gear in the top-right corner. After finding the menu toward the bottom, you select your speed. In all, it’s a four-step/tap process. YouTube is now testing a “Long press to watch at 2x” capability. You simply “long press anywhere on the player while watching a video to automatically bump the playback speed to 2x.” You’ll get a “Playing at 2x speed” message at the top of the window. On the web, letting go [...]

YouTube confirms ad blocker crackdown in testing, now on mobile too

YouTube ads have gotten way out of hand in recent years, but despite that, ads are still necessary to handle the costs of running the world’s largest video platform, and paying the millions of creators that make it all possible. Now, the company is confirming that it is actively testing blocking ad blockers on YouTube, and that seems to include on mobile devices, too. Last month a few users saw YouTube testing limited ad blocker blocking on YouTube.com. The test was referred to as an “experiment” by YouTube at the time, and of course, was met with harsh criticism from those using ad blockers. Over the past week or so, these tests seem to have expanded. That started with a [...]

Google’s next gaming play might be mini ‘Playables’ in YouTube

Following Stadia’s death at the start of this year, Google looks to be planning another gaming initiative inside YouTube with “Playables.” According to the Wall Street Journal on Friday, “YouTube is internally testing a product for playing online games.” “Playables” is the name of this gaming feature with titles accessible from the YouTube app/website on “mobile devices or desktop computers.” The report says there are several, but only details one: “Stack Bounce, an arcade game in which players attempt to smash layers of bricks with a bouncing ball.” It’s currently being tested internally with employees. A quick search reveals that it is an existing GameSnacks title, which originated as an Area 120 project to create games for low-power devices that [...]

YouTube overtakes Netflix in Poland

Netflix gave up its leading position to YouTube in streaming on TV in Poland in May. According to the latest findings of Nielsen’s The Gauge, the YouTube platform achieved a record share of 1.7% on TV in the entire Polish population, with Netflix slipping to 1.6%. Meanwhile, other streaming services had a combined 3.2% and – significantly – for the first time since The Gauge was launched in Poland in January, streaming usage overall declined. In other changes, compared to April linear television viewership increased by 0.3pp, accounting for 87.7% of the total TV viewership on TV. Pay-TV viewership (cable, satellite) increased, while terrestrial TV viewing declined.

YouTube TV testing non-sport Multiview steams

YouTube TV introduced Multiview in March and is now surfacing new, non-sport-related split screen streams in the Home tab. The five brand new Multiview streams will be for news, (general) sports, business news, weather, and Deportes. The news use cases make the most sense, with weather being more or less having a background nature. They will be available to watch 24/7 rather than being temporary and event-based. This is an expansion beyond the original sporting use case, which started with March Madness and should appear in the “Top Picks for You” carousel. Multiview supports two streams side-by-side, three (two above and one below), or four in a 2×2 grid. You can switch audio/captions between streams, as well as enter fullscreen [...]

YouTube’s ‘1080p Premium’ with better bitrate starts showing up on Android and Google TV

One of the latest new features for YouTube Premium subscribers is a new 1080p tier with a better bitrate, and Google is now testing that feature with some users on Android and Google TV. Back in February, YouTube was spotted testing a new “1080p Premium” tier that was exclusive to YouTube Premium subscribers. At the time, it was exclusive to iPhone and Apple TV. In April, Google officially announced the feature, explaining that it delivered 1080p content at a higher bitrate and that, yes, it was exclusive to Apple devices, but it would be coming to Android later on. Now, it seems Google is further testing support. Through the Android TV OS app for YouTube, the 1080p Premium tier was [...]
