Alexa can now make and receive calls through T-Mobile

Alexa now has the ability to let T-Mobile subscribers make and receive phone calls on dedicated devices hands-free. The new feature comes in the form of an Alexa skill, which can link your T-Mobile service directly to your Alexa Account. The new feature joins the other big US carriers AT&T and Verizon in enabling Alexa to handle phone calls. ”This is completely free for T-Mobile customers and it’s fully available to all Alexa customers today,” wrote T-Mobile spokesperson Trang Nguyen in an email to The Verge. In comparison, Verizon still charges you $5 per month to use its Alexa skill. You can enable the new feature by opening your Alexa app and then going to More > Settings > Communication. [...]

You can now use Netflix’s cheaper ads plan on your Apple TV

Netflix’s ad-supported tier finally works with Apple TV set-top box Netflix launched its cheaper “Basic with Ads” plan back in November. But the launch had a significant gotcha for Apple users: The Netflix tvOS app did not support the ads tier, meaning subscribers on that plan simply couldn’t use their Apple TV set-top box to watch Netflix. At the time, Netflix said support for the ads plan on Apple TV was “coming soon.” Five months on, support for the plan is finally available for Netflix users on Apple TV. The ads tier launch on Apple TV was confirmed in a statement to TechCrunch. The Netflix “Basic with Ads” plan costs $6.99 per month, a saving of $3 compared to the [...]

Android TV seems to be adding support for some form of user profiles

Google TV has taken over for Android TV, but it seems the company isn’t fully leaving behind the old experience just yet, as it appears to be rolling out some form of user profiles to some users. The original Android TV experience has gone by the wayside a bit in recent months, with more and more devices launching with Google TV instead as it takes over for the consumer experience, just as Google intended. But in the first major update in several months, Google appears to be rolling out support for profiles on Android TV, specifically on the Android TV “Discover” homescreen design. The feature was spotted by two users on the r/AndroidTV subreddit, with a profile switcher icon appearing [...]

YouTube TV is testing “Multiview” during March Madness

YouTube TV said last year that it was working on a multiview mode that would allow you to watch multiple channels at the same time. Now, that feature is available in a testing phase for March Madness. The company says that some “members have early access to this feature in the first round”. The feature is pretty straightforward, allowing you to watch four games in a 2×2 grid. This is pretty cool to have for the NCAA Tournament, which officially gets underway today with the first two games in the first four round. Currently, you’ll be able to select your desired viewing experience from the “Top Picks for you” carousel. But it’s important to note that during this preview, YouTube [...]

Millennials seemingly play games more than any other generation

Gaming is a hobby and a passion for all types of people of all ages across the globe, but time spent gaming is not split up equally amongst different age groups, with groups like millennials spending more time playing games than any other generation. This is according to a recent survey conducted by the ExpressVPN Gaming Team, who surveyed gamers from ages 16 – 55. The survey responses also included 1,000 different people from the US and 1,000 from the UK. And based on the feedback, it seems millennials (people in the age range of late 20s to early 40s) are more likely to play games for longer periods of time on a consistent basis. Data from the survey respondents [...]

Can’t hear that phone ring?

Can’t hear that phone ring? Smart home to the rescue! On a recent Internet of Things Podcast, we took a voicemail from Brian on our podcast hotline. His mother is an assisted living facility and doesn’t always hear her phone ring so he’s looking for a solution to that problem. Brian asked if there’s some type of device he could connect to his mother’s television that would display text on the screen when her phone rings or when he texts her. We don’t know of one but we do have some alternative suggestions that could work just as well. It helps that Brian’s mother is already familiar with Amazon Alexa. When living at home, she used Alexa to voice control [...]
