Telstra set to roll out new fetch TV offering after termination of Roku box contract

Telstra is set to roll out Fetch TV to millions of their customers as a replacement to the Roku Telstra TV which has according to many observers been a dismal failure for the big Telco who has had several attempts at trying to deliver a content service, since the early days of ‘BigPond’. Despite owning 35% of Foxtel Telstra management chose to acquire a 51% stake in Fetch TV, which is an aggregator of content as opposed to a creator of content similar to Foxtel. NBCUniversal, Amazon strike FAST channel deal for local NBC, Telemundo stations

Looking to grow their existing partnership and expand the reach of local news content, NBCUniversal and Amazon are taking NBC- and Telemundo-owned stations' local news channels to the Amazon News app on Fire TV and Echo Show devices. The deal fundamentally allows US-based customers to access premium local breaking news coverage and original content from NBC and Telemundo stations in the top TV regions 24/7, by streaming the stations’ free ad-supported TV (FAST) channels. The channels now available on Fire TV include: Noticias Telemundo Noreste; Noticias Telemundo California; Noticias Telemundo Texas; Noticias Telemundo Florida; NBC News in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Boston Bay Area, South Florida, San Diego and Connecticut. Peacock loses $704 million

Peacock Loses $704 Million, Reaches 22 Million Subscribers Days after Comcast fired NBCUniversal’s Jeff Shell, the company held its first-quarter earnings call, addressing the former CEO’s departure and Peacock’s growing losses. Brian Roberts, chairman of NBCU’s parent company, didn’t shy away from the Shell news, telling investors Thursday morning that the firing was “obviously a tough moment” for the organization. As a result, Comcast president Mike Cavanagh will step in as head of NBCUniversal for the time being. Regarding Peacock, the streamer grew its subscriber base to nearly 22 million, adding 2 million during the quarter as Comcast continues to lean into a dual-revenue model. Roku Ekes Out Q1 Revenue Growth of 1%, Streaming Accounts Grow More Than Expected to Hit 71.6 Million Roku came in above analyst estimates on the top line for the first quarter of 2023, as it gained 1.6 million active streaming accounts in the period — also above Wall Street expectations. But the company told investors that the macroeconomic environment was still “challenged” in the quarter. The company posted Q1 sales of $741 million, up 1%, and a net loss of $193.6 million, or $1.38 per share. Sling continues to add more Free TV Channels to Freestream

Sling TV has just added another 8 channels to its Freestream service. That’s their FAST service, with over 300 channels of free live TV. And about 41,000 on-demand titles, all for free. The new channels added to Sling’s Freestream service today, are mostly sports related. Viaplay launches on Roku devices in the US, Canada and the UK

A recent report from SVB MoffettNathanson suggested that the future for Roku will depend heavily on monetising connected TV and streaming, and as part of this drive it has inked a multi-year partnership with Viaplay Group in the UK, US and Canada. The new deal with the Nordic streamer will see Viaplay’s premium service available for subscription through Roku devices in the US, Canada and the UK. Apple TV+ growth slows in US while Netflix loses first place

A JustWatch research study revealed last month that Apple TV+’s global market share shrank in 2022 as the platform was overtaken by Paramount+. And according to a new report, Apple TV+ growth also slowed in the US – and Netflix lost the top spot in the ranking. Smart TVs pass 200 MN milestone

Confirming smart TVs’ growth in presence and in use, the fifth annual wave of Hub Entertainment Research’s Connected Home study has revealed that American homes now own an estimated 204 million smart TV sets. The Connected Home 2023 report was based on a survey conducted among 5,026 US consumers in February 2023 and cover consumer ownership of many types of media-related technologies. A top line finding was that smart TV ownership continues to climb with over a majority of all TV sets – six in ten (61%) –now reported to be smart sets, up from 45% in 2020 with TV homes reporting an average of 1.7 smart TVs per home.
