US video stack shrinks

As consumers express significant concerns about the state of the economy and rising inflation, some of them have turned to their video subscriptions as a means of saving money says a study from Hub Entertainment Research. HUb stacking 15JUne2023 Hub’s annual Best Bundle survey revealed that in 2023, for the first time, there was a year-on-year decline in the number of video sources viewers say they are using, something that the analyst said was of no surprise. It added that for video providers who benefited from consumers stacking more and more video subscriptions, a very good thing has ended – at least for now. The survey revealed that while MVPD cord-cutting was continuing unabated over the past few years, media [...]

US customers still don’t like their internet service providers

Customers are not happy with their internet service providers. But that's changing as fiber delivers faster, more consistent speed. The American Customer Satisfaction Index released its annual survey, based on over 22,000 customer interviews, revealing how we really feel about our internet service providers. The surprising takeaway: We're more satisfied now than we've been in years. Overall, ISPs scored 68 on the ACSI's 100-point scale -- an increase of six points over 2022 and the highest score since the ACSI started measuring ISPs in 2013. But although satisfaction has improved, the news isn't exactly great for ISPs, which rank at the bottom of the index, just ahead of gas stations but below airlines, health insurance providers and social media. If [...]

Google Assistant adds two new voices with Lime and Indigo

Google Assistant has not seen too many updates as of late (as the team focuses on Bard and generative AI), but it is now adding two new US English voices. The two new styles are called “Indigo” and “Lime,” with Google continuing to use a color-based naming scheme. Google said they are “designed to bring more diversity to your current options.” It joins the 10 other US English options, with the new ones appearing at the left of the carousel. You can access the “Assistant voice and speech output” page to make a selection from the Assistant settings menu, or with “Hey Google, change your voice.” It’s been several years since Google added new Assistant voices, while Amazon Alexa recently [...]

Here’s the Scoop on Free Over-the-Air TV Upgrades

Over-the-air broadcasting is going through a significant evolution that'll lead to 4K and HDR content, additional programming and more. And it will still be free. If you're paying for cable, satellite or even a live-TV service like YouTube TV, learning that you can get free network TV content over the air in every city in the US may sound appealing. That includes sports, news, dramas and comedies -- anything that's on ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, PBS and more. All you need is an antenna and maybe a separate, inexpensive tuner. This new broadcasting standard is called NextGen TV, aka ATSC 3.0. It has been rolling out across the US for several years. There are already NextGen TV stations in nearly [...]

Android TV users can now watch live TV

Android TV users are getting a special treat from Google today with the arrival of live TV. As part of a new feature added to the Android TV platform called the Live Lab, users can watch a wide array of content from a collection of free channels. As of right now this is a feature that only users in the US are getting access to. Google doesn’t mention when or if it will expand out to other regions, unfortunately. If you happen to use an Android TV device or have a TV with Android TV as the platform, and you’re in the US, you may start seeing the Live Lab today. Google does state though that this will be rolling [...]

‘Telly’ is a free dual-screen TV powered by ads, includes free Android TV dongle

For many, TV has once again become free on the back of ad-supported services and, now, one brand is hoping to take that a step further. “Telly,” a product from the co-founder of Pluto TV, is a dual-screen TV that is completely free because it shows you ads constantly. “Telly” is a 4K HDR television that has a 55-inch display, a built-in webcam (with privacy shutter), and a built-in soundbar. It’s really a complete home theater in one, and it’s all “sold” for free. The device is subsidized entirely on the back of advertising that appears not just during breaks in programming, but constantly on a smaller secondary display that’s found underneath the soundbar. That secondary display’s primary purpose is [...]
