DVB-I first in Spain

The first DVB-I tests have been taking place in Spain thanks to the latest example of a long-running collaboration between the public broadcaster RTVE and the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM). Under the auspices of the RTVE Chair at UPM, a live event at the end of April featured the first pilot of RTVE channels delivered using DVB-I linked to a digital terrestrial television (DTT) broadcast. The event included a demonstration of the channel tuning procedure. Other companies contributing to the initiative included Cellnex Telecom, Dolby, Sapec and the Televés Corporation, all of whom are on the advisory committee of the RTVE Chair at UPM. DAZN soars in Spain

DAZN’s media rights strategy has fuelled continued growth and seen it become the 10th most-watched streaming video service in Spain for the first time. According to the latest Consumer research from Ampere Analysis. It is also in 11th place in Italy, where it holds exclusive rights to the majority of games for the flagship football league, Serie A. Excluding social media services, DAZN is actually the fifth most-watched service in Spain, behind only the three leading SVOD services and Movistar’s TV Everywhere service (and marginally ahead of national broadcaster RTVE’s free-to-access streaming service). Disney+ loses 4m subs

Walt Disney’s streaming service Disney+ had a total of 157.8 million paid subscribers as of April 1. This, according to the company’s latest results, was 4 million fewer than the same period last year. The loss was almost entirely attributable to Disney+ Hotstar, which saw its paid subscriber total dip by 8% from 57.5 million to 52.9 million, over the period. Meanwhile, Disney+ had 46.3 million subscribers in its domestic (US and Canada) unit, down 1% on a year earlier, while the international operation, excluding Hotstar, saw its subscriber total increase by 2% to 58.6 million. Warner Bros. Discovery gains 7m streaming subs

Warner Bros. Discovery ended the first quarter with a total of 97.6 million DTC subscribers to its streaming services HBO, HBO Max and discovery+. This, according to the company’s latest results, was 7 million more than in the same period last year. In Q1 alone, it gained 1.5 million global subs. In the US and Canada, the number of subs stood at 55.3 million in the first quarter, up from 53.4 million a year earlier, while ARPU fell slightly over the same period, from $10.83 to $10.82. MyTF1 launches on Amazon Fire TV

TF1 Group’s streaming platform MyTF1 will debut on Amazon Fire TV Thursday. The broadcaster said the agreement with Amazon came out of its desire to support the evolution of French video consumption habits and to make its content accessible on all media. People with an Amazon Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Cube, Echo Show 15 or compatible smart TV can access MYTF1 by downloading the app – quick access is available by asking Alexa to “démarre MYTF1”. Amazon veut distribuer ses séries télévisées sur d’autres plateformes. Tout se fera par des accords commerciaux. Global FAST revenues set to triple

Global FAST revenues for TV series and movies are forecast to reach $18 billion in 2028. This, according to the latest report from Digital TV Research, will be the triple the $6 billion in 2022. The US will contribute 55% to the 2028 total, down from 67% in 2022. It will also add nearly $6 billion between 2022 and 2028 – or half of the world’s $12 billion additional revenues. Commenting on the findings of the report, Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “The FAST market by platform will remain fragmented.
