Android TV seems to be adding support for some form of user profiles

Google TV has taken over for Android TV, but it seems the company isn’t fully leaving behind the old experience just yet, as it appears to be rolling out some form of user profiles to some users. The original Android TV experience has gone by the wayside a bit in recent months, with more and more devices launching with Google TV instead as it takes over for the consumer experience, just as Google intended. But in the first major update in several months, Google appears to be rolling out support for profiles on Android TV, specifically on the Android TV “Discover” homescreen design. The feature was spotted by two users on the r/AndroidTV subreddit, with a profile switcher icon appearing [...]

YouTube TV is testing “Multiview” during March Madness

YouTube TV said last year that it was working on a multiview mode that would allow you to watch multiple channels at the same time. Now, that feature is available in a testing phase for March Madness. The company says that some “members have early access to this feature in the first round”. The feature is pretty straightforward, allowing you to watch four games in a 2×2 grid. This is pretty cool to have for the NCAA Tournament, which officially gets underway today with the first two games in the first four round. Currently, you’ll be able to select your desired viewing experience from the “Top Picks for you” carousel. But it’s important to note that during this preview, YouTube [...]

The future of TV is up in the air

Broadcasters are betting that antennas and modern DVRs will help them stay relevant. But a stalled transition to ATSC 3.0 and massive growth of linear streaming services could throw a wrench into those plans. Antenna television is back. In recent years, millions of cord-cutters have rediscovered antennas as a reliable way to watch broadcast networks like ABC, NBC, and FOX, all for free — and now, broadcasters are eager to get the rest of us hooked. They’ve been marching ahead with the deployment of ATSC 3.0, a next-generation broadcast format that supports 4K, HDR, Dolby Atmos audio, and even interactive apps over the air, no cable or streaming subscription required. A little over a year ago, one of the country’s [...]

Slump

Slump predicted for US video service spend Research from Ampere Analysis is warning that 2023 will become known as the year when per-household spending on subscription streaming (SVOD) services in the US could no longer compensate for the continued decline in pay-TV and spend on video begins to shrink. The study calculates that annual bills for video content peaked at $1,146 per household in the US in 2022 with a post-pandemic bounce-back in theatrical expenditure and an 18% year-on-year increase in SVOD outlay to $374 per household per year. However, Ampere says 2023 will see US SVOD revenue growth slowing, hindered by market maturity and economic pressures, and with the added impact of cord-cutting seeing yearly pay-TV investment per average [...]
