Netflix isn’t planning to make a native Vision Pro app yet

Netflix isn’t planning to make a native version of its app for the Vision Pro, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in today’s Power On newsletter. Instead, he says, the company will allow its existing iPad app to run, unmodified, on Apple’s forthcoming mixed reality headset. As Gurman’s piece points out, developers who don’t want to build Vision Pro software from the ground up have two choices: let their iPad apps run as is on the device or tweak them for the Vision Pro. Netflix has chosen the former, though whether pointedly or not, we don’t know. Of course, very few companies have actually pledged dedicated software for the Vision Pro at this point, but Netflix’s reticence carries some baggage. The [...]

More than one-third of US SVOD ready to reduce service spend

New and somewhat worrying research from Aluma Insights has found that as many as 35% of US subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) customers believe they are spending too much on services and are looking to cut back, representing a 40% increase over 2022 and threefold that of 2019. Aluma SVOD Spending Preceptions 19July2023 The key finding of the study was that consumers are increasingly frustrated by ever-greater monthly streaming expenses and it is only going to get worse. Only 5% are interested in spending more on SVOD services, down 38% from 2022. Aluma noted that with most SVOD providers still bleeding cash, growing subscriptions has taken a backseat to optimising revenue via higher prices, layoffs, and decreased content spending, among other measures. [...]

Record streaming usage in US

Streaming accounted for a record 33.7% of overall TV usage in the US in June, with YouTube and Netflix achieving their largest shares to date. According to Nielsen’s The Gauge, by comparison cable content viewing made up 30.6% of TV usage and broadcast content viewing 20.8%. Overall TV usage in June was up on a monthly basis for the first time since January (+2.2% vs. May), an uptick that was mainly attributed to the increased availability of younger viewers. Specifically, TV usage among the 2-11 and 12-17 age groups was up 16.3% and 24.1%, respectively, compared with May, with non-traditional TV options (i.e., streaming, video gaming) accounting for 90% of the increases across both groups. Time spent streaming (via a [...]

Vizio D-Series Full HD Smart TV

The Vizio D-Series Full HD Smart TV offers smooth performance and a good display at a budget-friendly price. However, don't expect a 4K experience with a price point that is less than $200. Smart TVs are a great way to cut the cord and not be strapped to a cable plan. They allow you to stream content from multiple apps without the need to plug in an external media source. The future of television is apps, and companies nowadays are setting the stage — with dedicated operating systems — to support all popular streaming services. The Vizio D-Series Full HD Smart TV doesn't come with a 4K display that you see in smart televisions today. Still, its reasonable price makes [...]
