Czech pay-TV still lagging behind Slovakia

There are a third fewer viewers with pay-TV in the Czech Republic than in neighbouring Slovakia. According to Atmedia, while the figure in the former among those aged 15-69 stood at 57% in the second half of 2022, it was 95% in the latter. Commenting on the figures, Pavel Müller, head of research and marketing at Atmedia, said: “A significant part of Czech viewers do not pay for watching television and only watch free-to-air stations available on digital terrestrial broadcasting. There are many such television stations in the Czech Republic, and their number is also growing due to the transition to DVB-T2. Mixed picture for East European pay-TV

The number of pay-TV subscribers in Eastern Europe is forecast to fall by 8 million from 81 million in the peak year of 2018 to 73 million in 2028. However, according to the latest report by Digital TV Research, 2018 included 17 million analogue cable subscribers, which will drop to zero by 2027. So, the number of digital pay-TV subscribers will in fact climb by 8 million between 2018 and 2028. Streaming services up spend on sports rights

Subscription OTT services’ spend on sports rights globally is forecast to reach $8.5 billion this year. According to a new report by Ampere Analysis, this will be a 64% increase on the total in 2022. The research also predicts that the share of spend on sports rights by streaming platforms will increase in 2023 to reach 21% of global sports rights investment, up from 13% in 2022.
