Mediavision: Streaming growth in Finland, pushed by telcos

The bundling of SVOD services by telcos in Finland has led the Nordic country to lead the region in SVOD growth. Consultancy Mediavision says the share of households that have this type of streaming service is higher in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Average household spend on TV and streaming is noticeably lower in Finland; €32 per month compared to an average of €50 in the entire Nordic region. During the spring, the number of subscribing SVOD households has passed 1.5 million, corresponding to a penetration of 6%. This equals an annual growth of 8% in subscribing households. As in the other Nordic countries, the growth can largely be attributed to the packaging of both traditional TV and streaming services by [...]

DAZN soars in Spain

DAZN’s media rights strategy has fuelled continued growth and seen it become the 10th most-watched streaming video service in Spain for the first time. According to the latest Consumer research from Ampere Analysis. It is also in 11th place in Italy, where it holds exclusive rights to the majority of games for the flagship football league, Serie A. Excluding social media services, DAZN is actually the fifth most-watched service in Spain, behind only the three leading SVOD services and Movistar’s TV Everywhere service (and marginally ahead of national broadcaster RTVE’s free-to-access streaming service). The achievement is particularly noteworthy considering that DAZN is pay-to-access and a sport-specialist platform, which naturally limits its breadth of appeal compared to services that offer wider [...]

The future of streaming is ads

The big-name streaming services had a really good run. The likes of Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus, and all the other Pluses have spent the last decade upending the way we make and consume movies and shows and changing the whole business of Hollywood in the process. For a few (or not so few) bucks a month, more entertainment than ever is now at our fingertips. But it seems the streaming revolution has hit a bit of a wall. Most services are growing more slowly now that they’ve reached most of their possible audience. The tens of billions they’re spending on content annually seem to be producing diminishing returns. Investors are no longer sure streaming is [...]
