FTTH drives Portuguese broadband market

FTTH now accounts for almost two-thirds of fixed broadband accesses in Portugal. According to data published by the regulator ANACOM, the number of FTTH accesses increased by 246,000, or 9.3%, in the year to March 31. As of the end of Q1, 64.4% of accesses were FTTH, up 3.4pp on a year earlier. The penetration rate of residential fixed broadband customers was 91.7 per 100 households, 3.2 pp more than in the same period in 2022. Compared to the same quarter of last year, the number of fixed broadband accesses increased by 152,000 (+3.5%), reaching 4.5 million. Bundled services grow in Portugal

The number of service package subscribers in Portugal at the end of Q1 stood at 4.6 million. This, according to the regulator ANACOM, was 150,000, or 3.4%, more than in the same period last year. The growth is exclusively down to 4/5P offers (+177, 000, or +7.7%). The 4/5P offers were also the most used, with 2.5 million subscribers (54.2% of the total number for bundled offers), followed by the 3P offers, with 1.7 million subscribers (36.8%). 3P offers registered the biggest decrease since they started the downward trajectory in 2022 (-1.2%). Streaming and pay-TV grow in Portugal

Usage of streaming video services in Portugal increased by 9 percentage points between 2020-22. Furthermore, according to a report by the regulator ANACOM on the country’s communications market, Meo accounted for the highest share of pay-TV subscribers at the end of last year (41.1%), followed by Nos (37%) and Vodafone (18.8%). Pay-TV penetration in 2022 increased by 1.3 percentage points and in the domestic sector there were 96 accesses per 100 households at the end of last year. Growth in penetration of fixed services was due to the growing take-up of bundled offers, which reached a penetration rate of 91.4 per 100 households.
