Netflix strengthens position in Poland

Netflix now accounts for over half of the time spent on viewing streaming platforms by Polish internet users. According to research by Mediapanel published by Wirtualne Media>, the figure stood at 54.36% in June, up from 50.58% in May. Disney was in second place with 6.97% (6.09%), followed by Player with 6.64% (6.71%) and HBO Max with 6.19% (5.73). The research also shows that Netflix was far ahead of its competitors in terms of real users (11,097,972, compared to 9,960,084 in May), with Disney in second place (3,840,210 compared to 2,955,528 in May). Increased reach for TVP services

Up to five thematic channels operated by the Polish public broadcaster TVP are now being distributed by the operators Play and UPC. According to TVP, the channels in question are TVP Info, TVP Kultura, TVP Nauka and Alfa TVP. Separately, the public broadcaster’s on demand service TVP VOD can now be received on Samsung TVs with the Tizen 3.0 operating system. As a result, the TVP VOD app is now available on over 84% of smart TVs in Poland. These include LG and Hisense as well as Samsung. TVP has also released a new mobile app for the channel TVP Polonia, which is aimed principally at the Polish diaspora.

Rakuten TV launches own channel in Poland

The streaming platform Rakuten TV has announced the launch of its first owned and operated FAST channel in Poland. Known as Top Movies Polska, it will be made available to viewers from mid-July and offer a wide range of movie content, from both Hollywood and European distributors. Top Movies Polska will be available for streaming on the Rakuten TV app across all devices and the first pure FAST movie channel on the Polish market. YouTube overtakes Netflix in Poland

Netflix gave up its leading position to YouTube in streaming on TV in Poland in May. According to the latest findings of Nielsen’s The Gauge, the YouTube platform achieved a record share of 1.7% on TV in the entire Polish population, with Netflix slipping to 1.6%. Meanwhile, other streaming services had a combined 3.2% and – significantly – for the first time since The Gauge was launched in Poland in January, streaming usage overall declined. In other changes, compared to April linear television viewership increased by 0.3pp, accounting for 87.7% of the total TV viewership on TV. Pay-TV viewership (cable, satellite) increased, while terrestrial TV viewing declined.

Netflix dominates in Poland

Polish internet users who access streaming services spend half their time doing so watching Netflix. This, according to data produced by Gemius/PBI and published by Wirtualne Media, is over seven times as long as any other service. In May, Netflix claimed a 50.58% share of viewing time, with the next most popular services being Player (6.71%), Disney (6.09%) and TVP (6.03%). Poland’s Play introduces new generation TV

The Polish operator Play, which is part of iliad Group, has launched a new TV service available in two variants. New Generation Television combines channel packages with streaming services, while TV Max offers a wide portfolio of channels. Both cost PLN45 (€9.9), with a discount for existing Play customers. New Generation Television offers 75 channels, access to Viaplay and a pool of points that can be freely exchanged for streaming services, premium packages and packages of additional channels. New streaming record in Poland

Streaming viewership on the TV screen is on the rise in Poland. In February, according to Nielsen’s The Gauge, viewers in the country spent an average of 16 minutes a day watching streaming content on TV (an increase of one minute from January). Streaming viewership reached a record 6.4% of total TV time, surpassing 6% of TV usage for the first time. Netflix and YouTube were the most popular streaming platforms. Rakuten TV expands in Poland

The streaming platform Rakuten TV has added two new localised FAST channels to its offer in Poland. Grjngo is the world’s largest streaming brand for western films, of which there is also a localised version in German, Spanish and English, while Bjgtjme is focused on other film genres with all its content in English and dubbed into Polish. Both channels are owned by the international operator Amogo Networx. Rakuten TV is currently distributed in 43 European countries. HbbTV takes off in Poland

The number of homes in Poland with an active HbbTV connection has now passed 1.3 million. Speaking to Wirtualne Media, Jaroslaw Mroczkowski, the strategic advisor at the national transmission company Emitel, added that a milestone in HbbTV development took place in December 2018 with the launch of a service aimed at the supporters of the football club Legia Warsaw. This proved to be very popular among DTT viewers and caught the attention of broadcasters, who could see the potential of HbbTV. Linear TV

Linear TV dominates in Poland Nielsen data shows that linear TV viewership still dominates on a TV set in Poland, with streaming’s share at under 6%. According to Nielsen, it has released The Gauge: Poland for the first time. This new audience measurement report, which was created using methodologies conceptually similar to The Gauge in the US, will provide Poland’s media industry with a monthly analysis of TV viewing across key delivery platforms.
