Here’s Why Android users flocking to iOS face steep learning curve

In a tech landscape dominated by fierce debates between Android and iOS users, it is interesting to see what happens when users do the jump. PhoneArena reports that more Android users are making the leap to iOS than ever before, reaching the highest point in five years. However, this transition may not be as seamless as expected. A new report from smartphone comparison service Green Smartphones reveals that many first-time iOS users encounter a steep learning curve when adapting to Apple's operating system. Let's dive into the details. Android's Intuitive Interface One key aspect that sets Android apart from iOS is its user interface. According to data, many iOS users struggle with basic smartphone functions such as setting up voice [...]

Matter support is now available in the Google Home app on iOS

Matter hasn’t made quite the splash many were hoping, but the smart home standard is making its way to more and more devices. Now, Matter support is live in the Google Home app for iOS. Support for Matter first went live at the tail-end of last year, and it was available to the Google Home app on Android pretty quickly. By the end of January, Matter-compatible devices were finally available and gave us a glimpse at how the Home app would support the standard. But, unfortunately, iOS users were left out for quite a while. At Google I/O last month, it was announced that Matter support would be rolling out to Google Home for iOS soon, and it seems that’s [...]

New Amazon Matter update supports Thread

Amazon has rolled out a major update for the support of its new smart home standard. They have introduced Matter to over 100 million smart speakers, as well as allowing the Alexa iOS app to function better. It has now become easier to connect to any smart home device. Amazon launched Matter late last year, taking a slow approach to ensure the update worked well prior to releasing it to their huge customer base. Now, Alexa is Matter-ready. This Echo smart speaker now allows the use of a Thread border router. It can support Thread devices such as Nanolead smart lights and Eve smart plugs. You can also now use any iPhone device to introduce Matter to your home. Matter [...]

iOS 16.5 code

iOS 16.5 code indicates quad-box Picture-in-Picture feature in development for Apple TV sports streams Picture-in-Picture has been a feature on Apple’s platforms for a few years, allowing a single video to pop out into a floating window while the user browses the rest of the OS. Apple appears to be working on upgrading that capability, at least for live sports matches in the Apple TV app. Code references first spotted by Steve Moser in the iOS 16.5 betas describe a new “Multiview” experience for the Apple TV app, supporting up to four simultaneous streams at once. The Apple TV app live-streams sports games including MLS Season Pass and MLB Friday Night Baseball, with Apple rumored to be actively negotiating more [...]

You can now use Netflix’s cheaper ads plan on your Apple TV

Netflix’s ad-supported tier finally works with Apple TV set-top box Netflix launched its cheaper “Basic with Ads” plan back in November. But the launch had a significant gotcha for Apple users: The Netflix tvOS app did not support the ads tier, meaning subscribers on that plan simply couldn’t use their Apple TV set-top box to watch Netflix. At the time, Netflix said support for the ads plan on Apple TV was “coming soon.” Five months on, support for the plan is finally available for Netflix users on Apple TV. The ads tier launch on Apple TV was confirmed in a statement to TechCrunch. The Netflix “Basic with Ads” plan costs $6.99 per month, a saving of $3 compared to the [...]

Google

YouTube

YouTube testing video queue on Android and iOS; here’s how to enable “Add to queue” is already available on the YouTube website, and it’s now in testing for the Android and iOS apps. At the moment, “Save to Watch later” or “Save to playlist” is how you can get back to something that you don’t want to view right away. However, these two options are more permanent and save things to your library, thus requiring manual removal after watching. A queue is more temporary, and the YouTube mobile apps are finally getting one. Once live, the three-dot overflow menu next to videos — YouTube Shorts don’t apply — will house a new “Play last in queue” option at the very [...]
