Bundled services grow in Portugal

The number of service package subscribers in Portugal at the end of Q1 stood at 4.6 million. This, according to the regulator ANACOM, was 150,000, or 3.4%, more than in the same period last year. The growth is exclusively down to 4/5P offers (+177, 000, or +7.7%). The 4/5P offers were also the most used, with 2.5 million subscribers (54.2% of the total number for bundled offers), followed by the 3P offers, with 1.7 million subscribers (36.8%). 3P offers registered the biggest decrease since they started the downward trajectory in 2022 (-1.2%).

Gen Z’s Digital Dilemma: Does the Never Ending Stream of Trends Point to Something More Sinister?

Gen Z, the generation born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, has been credited with inventing a plethora of new aesthetics and subcultures. From cottagecore to dark academia, this generation seems to be constantly reinventing and redefining what it means to be ‘in’. The collective internet seems to be dismissing these trends as mere internet fads, but the truth is that they represent something deeper — a severe sense of disconnection and alienation that many young people feel. In a world where social media dominates, Gen Z is constantly bombarded with images of perfection and success, making it difficult to find a sense of belonging amidst all the perfectly curated ‘good side’ of everyone around them. They are the first [...]

SVOD keeps pace in East Asia

Despite a global slowdown, and with homes in the established markets experiencing fatigue and major players starting to lose subscribers, the subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) market is still going strong in East Asia says research from Dataxis. The study points to an interest in premium content, with East Asian markets showing differentiated consumption habits high purchasing power, multiscreen content consumption and high connectivity rates that enable large-scale streaming. In Japan, the SVOD subscriber base was found to be growing strongly and is estimated to do so until 2027. ARPU is projected to start decreasing in 2025, thus enabling revenue growth until 2025. Growth is even more dynamic in South Korea, where both the 15 million and the 20 million subscribers’ milestones [...]

Mediavision: Streaming growth in Finland, pushed by telcos

The bundling of SVOD services by telcos in Finland has led the Nordic country to lead the region in SVOD growth. Consultancy Mediavision says the share of households that have this type of streaming service is higher in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Average household spend on TV and streaming is noticeably lower in Finland; €32 per month compared to an average of €50 in the entire Nordic region. During the spring, the number of subscribing SVOD households has passed 1.5 million, corresponding to a penetration of 6%. This equals an annual growth of 8% in subscribing households. As in the other Nordic countries, the growth can largely be attributed to the packaging of both traditional TV and streaming services by [...]

SVOD to gain 400m subs

Global SVOD subscriptions are forecast increase by 400 million between 2022 and 2028 to reach 1.76 billion. This, according to the latest report from Digital TV Research, reveals that there is still plenty of SVOD growth left. By 2028, 24 countries will have more than 10 million SVOD subscriptions. The report adds that six US-based platforms will have 972 million SVOD subscribers by 2028 (55% of the world’s total), up from 711 million in 2022. Much of this fast growth will come from the younger platforms completing their global rollouts. Commenting on the findings of the report, Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “Netflix will remain the largest platform despite Disney+ adding 57 million subscribers between 2022 [...]

What’s coming next in the smart home?

Consumers are still not sold on the smart home, with their biggest concerns being privacy and fragmentation. That’s according to Raza Shah, technology strategy and design leader at Jabil, a contract manufacturer that has manufactured many smart home products. Shah and I spoke this week in the wake of the release of Jabil’s 2023 Smart Home Report, which looks at the future ways consumers might interact with the smart home. It sheds light on how far off manufacturers think Matter deployment is, which sensors are the most exciting, and how AI will affect product development. For me it’s a chance to look at what’s coming next in the smart home and what we’re still struggling with. I purchased my first [...]
