Sky boosts Sky Glass, Sky Stream experiences

To celebrate the start of the Women’s World Cup which will see a particular spike in viewers when the England Lionesses take to the field, broadcaster Sky has unveiled a number of new experience features for its Entertainment OS platform, all on the Sky Glass and Sky Stream products. A range of voice commands head the key features. Viewers can use phrases like ‘Lionesses’ and ‘It’s Coming Home’ for live games, catch-up, highlights and results tables for the Women’s Football World Cup. Subscription-based, paid-for TV scores with sports content spend

Despite financial pressures, 82% of UK TV consumers will maintain, or increase, spend on sports viewership over the next year a study from consumer insights provider Toluna has revealed. Pluto TV is now available to Virgin Media customers

Virgin Media households with either the Virgin TV 360 or Stream products can now receive over 100 live linear channels from Pluto TV. The genres span drama, news, sport, entertainment and kids’ programmes alongside thousands of iconic films and television series on-demand. FAST channels on the platform include CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which follows an elite team of forensic investigators. Connect Fibre adds Netgem-powered TV bundles

Looking to add further value to its gigabit connectivity bundles, UK altnet Connect Fibre has chosen TV-as-a-service provider Netgem to complement its full-fibre broadband service with video products based on Netgem’s streaming solutions for UK ISPs. Toshiba releases QLED TV with built-in Fire TV

One of the UK’s leading brands in television displays have announced the launch of a new range of TVs with built in Fire TV. Toshiba’s QF5D TVs are available in 43”, 50”, 55” and 65” models with prices starting at £349. Customers can access hundreds of thousands of films and TV series through favourite streaming services such as Prime Video, Netflix, NOW, Disney+ and BBC iPlayer. Vodafone and Three, two of the UK’s biggest carriers, will merge

Announced today, UK carrier Vodafone and Three have reached a deal that will see the two merge into one carrier with a goal to create “one of Europe’s leading 5G networks.” In a press release, Vodafone UK and Three UK announced that merged network, currently referred to as “MergeCo,” will bring “a better network experience with greater coverage and reliability at no extra cost” to UK consumers. It also promises a “six-fold increase in average data speeds” by 2034 and 99% coverage of the UK with its 5G network. SVOD subs fall in UK

The number of households in the UK with access to an SVOD service stood at 19.08 million at the end of the first quarter. This, according to Barb’s Establishment survey, amounted to 67.4% of total households and was down 1.7% on the total at the end of 2022. UK consumers want easier ways to manage multiple subscriptions

The majority of UK consumers (86%) want to be able to active and deactivate subscriptions, such as streaming services, "whenever they like", according to new research from e-commerce tech platform Bango. ITVX sustains strong launch

The UK’s first integrated advertising and subscription platform ITVX had a total of 389 million streaming hours in the first quarter. This was a 49% increase on the broadcaster ITV’s streaming hours in the same period last year. Meanwhile, its total digital revenue amounted to £106 million (€122 million), a 29% increase on ITV’s in Q1 2022, and share of commercial viewing practically unchanged at 34.4% (-0.1%). Commenting on the service’s performance, Carolyn McCall, ITV chief executive, said: “exclusives, such as Nolly and The Twelve attracted new viewers, 80% of whom went on to explore other content on ITVX. Viaplay launches on Roku devices in the US, Canada and the UK

A recent report from SVB MoffettNathanson suggested that the future for Roku will depend heavily on monetising connected TV and streaming, and as part of this drive it has inked a multi-year partnership with Viaplay Group in the UK, US and Canada. The new deal with the Nordic streamer will see Viaplay’s premium service available for subscription through Roku devices in the US, Canada and the UK.
