‘Telly’ is a free dual-screen TV powered by ads, includes free Android TV dongle

For many, TV has once again become free on the back of ad-supported services and, now, one brand is hoping to take that a step further. “Telly,” a product from the co-founder of Pluto TV, is a dual-screen TV that is completely free because it shows you ads constantly. “Telly” is a 4K HDR television that has a 55-inch display, a built-in webcam (with privacy shutter), and a built-in soundbar. It’s really a complete home theater in one, and it’s all “sold” for free. The device is subsidized entirely on the back of advertising that appears not just during breaks in programming, but constantly on a smaller secondary display that’s found underneath the soundbar. That secondary display’s primary purpose is [...]

Telstra set to roll out new fetch TV offering after termination of Roku box contract

Telstra is set to roll out Fetch TV to millions of their customers as a replacement to the Roku Telstra TV which has according to many observers been a dismal failure for the big Telco who has had several attempts at trying to deliver a content service, since the early days of ‘BigPond’. Despite owning 35% of Foxtel Telstra management chose to acquire a 51% stake in Fetch TV, which is an aggregator of content as opposed to a creator of content similar to Foxtel. According to Fetch executives the launch will kick off shortly with Telstra customers set to be given access to a box that has recently undergone a major software update. Ironically, more than a third of [...]

The first DVB-I tests have been taking place in Spain thanks to the latest example of a long-running collaboration between the public broadcaster RTVE and the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM). The event included a demonstration of the channel tuning procedure. Other companies contributing to the initiative included Cellnex Telecom, Dolby, Sapec and the Televés Corporation, all of whom are on the advisory committee of the RTVE Chair at UPM. DAZN soars in Spain

DAZN’s media rights strategy has fuelled continued growth and seen it become the 10th most-watched streaming video service in Spain for the first time. According to the latest Consumer research from Ampere Analysis. It is also in 11th place in Italy, where it holds exclusive rights to the majority of games for the flagship football league, Serie A. Excluding social media services, DAZN is actually the fifth most-watched service in Spain, behind only the three leading SVOD services and Movistar’s TV Everywhere service (and marginally ahead of national broadcaster RTVE’s free-to-access streaming service). The achievement is particularly noteworthy considering that DAZN is pay-to-access and a sport-specialist platform, which naturally limits its breadth of appeal compared to services that offer wider [...]
