YouTube tests suite of FAST channels

YouTube is looking to introduce a range of FAST channels as its ambitions continue to lean further towards traditional video.

Wall Street Journal reported the Alphabet company was in talks with a number of potential partners to include their films and TV shows. In launching its own FAST channels, YouTube would put itself in competition with international players Roku, Pluto TV and Tubi, and country-specific operations such as ITVX.

FAST channels screen a mix of archive content and some more recent hits. For example, Pluto TV has debuted episodes on Star Trek on its platform as a means to promote the paid-for Paramount+.

In the United States, YouTube has already established a marketplace for paid streaming services, along the lines of how part of Amazon Prime Video already operates.

The Journal says YouTube is proposing a revenue share with content providers, similar to what’s already in place for its existing content creators.

Alphabet also runs YouTubeTV featuring channel brands including PBS, Discovery, HGTV, Food Network. MTV, Nickelodeon and HBO.
