France Télévisions plans UHD Olympics
France Télévisions is planning to launch 4K broadcast service in time for the Paris Olympics in 2024.
It’s anticipated the initial 4K versions of France 2 and France 3 will launch as early as September this year.
Under the proposal France 2 would be broadcast entirely in 4K, broadcasting native UHD shows, and upscaling those that were not available in the format.
France 3 would only broadcast in UHD for part of the time.
France Télévisions plans a definition of 2160p at 50 frames per second, based on 10-bit encoding and HEVC compression. HDR would also be available.
The 4K service would be rolled out gradually, starting in September in the major cities of Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Nantes, Lille, before extending to the whole of the country by 2024.
A number of tenders have been published in the France TV website with a deadline of April 11.
