Humane announces its wearable communicator will be named ‘Humane Ai Pin’

Humane, a company established by former Apple executives, has revealed the name of its wearable “Star Trek”-style communicator that it first showed off in April 2023.
After that sneak peek of its product in April, Humane has now unveiled the name of it, called the Humane Ai Pin. It will formally launch to the public later in 2023.

“We are excited to reveal our first device will be called the Humane Ai Pin,” said Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, Co-Founders of Humane. “Our Ai Pin presents an opportunity for people to take AI with them everywhere and to unlock a new era of personal mobile computing which is seamless, screenless, and sensing.”

They also said that Humane is working with Qualcomm to power the Ai Pin with a Snapdragon chip, though they didn’t mention which generation of the chip it runs.

The wearable device, which incorporates intelligent technology, utilizes a variety of sensors to facilitate contextual and ambient compute interactions. Imran Chaudhri showcased a subset of these interactions during his TED Talk titled “The disappearing computer — and a world where you can take AI everywhere,” marking the first public preview of these innovative features.

The device’s physical appearance resembles the narrow yet bulky communicator badge seen in Star Trek. It’s designed as a wearable, typically positioned over the heart area. While the top part likely houses a microphone and speaker, the bottom part is equipped with a laser projector.

While no significant details have been released about the device, that laser projector was demonstrated showing phone controls on the wearer’s outstretched hands.

In 2018, Humane was established by Bethany Bongiorno, a former director of software engineering, and Imran Chaudhri, a designer, both of whom had previously worked at Apple. They crossed paths while collaborating on the iPad project and decided to depart from Apple in 2017 to embark on their venture.

Since then, the company has recruited several former Apple employees. In March, Humane made a public announcement stating their intention to develop a software platform and transition towards artificial intelligence, marking a significant shift after years of maintaining a secretive approach.

To receive future updates and gain what the company calls priority access to the unveiling of the Humane Ai Pin later this year, people have the option to join a waitlist on the official Humane website.
